But, it is the big issue of the day so I will briefly set out where I stand.

First, I think the referendum result should be respected.  I didn’t vote to leave.  I thought the process of leaving would be very difficult and that there would be tangible downsides to being outside the European Union.  I don’t resile from those views but my side lost.

Second, in delivering Brexit, we should leave in a way that means we continue to be well placed to trade with the EU.  This means getting a deal.

The EU is our single biggest trading partner, in part because of the highly advanced level of co-ordination and co-operation we currently have.  To move from such a relationship to the very basic World Trade Organisation terms would be enormously harmful to our economy.

To get a deal, we need to find an arrangement that is acceptable to Parliament and negotiable with the EU.  Evidently, that is not proving easy.

MPs need to demonstrate a willingness to compromise, find pragmatic ways forward and recognise the balance of risks.  That may mean accepting one’s second or third choice in order to avoid the worst outcome.  The same can be said of the EU.

By the time you read this, I hope we will have reached a deal.  If we have not, I do not think we should be complacent about the consequences of leaving without a deal.
